alex — security pro who would rather fix it himself

SYNOPSIS

I make systems harder to break and easier to run. Off the clock, I'm on the water, on the trails, or in the garage fixing something I could have paid someone else to fix.

DESCRIPTION

I started on the help desk, moved into systems administration, and found my way to security. Along the way I've worked on incident response, business continuity, vulnerability management, and identity, plus plenty of automation so the routine stuff runs itself. I'm happiest hands-on: I'd rather test an idea in my own lab than read about it.

I live in Connecticut, where Sundays belong to the Patriots and winters belong to the Celtics. I'm a dad, a boat owner, a mountain biker getting back into it, and a returning guitar player, which is a polite way of saying my fingers remember more than they can play.

What I spend my time on

// the work
Security, hands-on
Incident response, vulnerability management, identity, and resilience planning. I like problems you can measure and fix for good, not just report on.
// hours back
Automation
If I do something twice, I start figuring out how to never do it again. Workflows, scripts, and AI that take the busywork so people can keep the judgment.
// the main thing
Family
Dad first. The boat started as a test to see if the family would actually like boating. They did, so now it's a whole thing.
// on the water
Boating
A 2000 Cobalt 226 the whole family piles into, maintained mostly by me, which means I know exactly what's under the engine cover.
// two wheels
Mountain biking
Three years on a Trek Fuel EX 8, and currently getting back into it. Shorter rides, fewer heroics, more fun.
// player one
Gaming
Xbox, mostly RPGs. Give me a long story, a skill tree, and a rainy weekend.
// New England sports
Patriots & Celtics
Sundays belong to the Patriots, winters to the Celtics. My mood depends on both more than I'd like to admit.
// garage
Trucks & wrenching
A lifted 2020 Ram 1500 that tows the boat, and a standing habit of doing my own wrenching wherever I can.
// build & play
Lego & guitar
Lego builds that slowly take over every shelf, a guitar I'm relearning (rock and country blues), and any home project I can do myself before calling someone.

Things I build for fun

// home lab
Security lab
A Proxmox virtualization host, Pi-hole DNS filtering, a Synology NAS, and a UniFi gateway feeding a 48-port Cisco Catalyst PoE switch. Next up: proper network segmentation and an open-source SIEM.
// ai
Jarvis
A personal AI command center built on Claude: daily news briefings, portfolio watch, and media scouting, all in one place.
// this site
alexleloup.com
Hand-built in vanilla HTML, CSS, and JS. Zero third-party requests, no trackers, WCAG AA contrast, strict CSP. The terminal is the point.
